Reasonable questions
Frequently asked questions
Everything people ask us, usually mid-bite.
What is a club sandwich?
Legend has it the name is an acronym. Legend is probably wrong, but legend makes a better sandwich:
“Chicken, Lettuce, Under Bacon.”The acronym, according to legend. According to historians: no.
All of that between toasted bread with tomato and mayonnaise, stacked.
Why?
Someone has to.
Why “Sandwich Saga”, then?
A saga is a long story where not much happens to the same people over and over again. That’s more or less what we’re doing, one club at a time.
It’s still only club sandwiches for now, though. club.club was taken and this was the next best domain.
Do you pay for your own sandwiches?
Every single one. No freebies.
Can I suggest a place?
Feel free. If you think you have found the best club sandwich in the land, let us know here.
What's the scoring criteria?
Officially: bread, filling, structural integrity and value, each out of five, averaged. Unofficially: whether I liked it. The spreadsheet exists mainly to make the second thing look like the first thing.
Why do you hate egg mayo?
Some things don’t need explaining. Egg mayo is warm when it should be cold, wet when it should be anything else, and it certainly does not belong in a club sandwich.
Will sandwiches that aren't strictly club sandwiches be penalised?
Not on that alone. We review the sandwich in front of us with an open heart. But a kitchen that swaps the chicken for turkey or gets creative with the layers is making things harder on itself. Every departure from the canon is a risk, and the canon exists because it works.
