Burntisland Sands Hotel

It arrived on a wooden board with a dressed salad and a few potato chips. Cheese and tomato had been invited along, so we’re not being purely traditional about the Club here. Bread comes as white or wholemeal, and I went wholemeal, toasted.

So, my thoughts. A bog standard, straight down the middle Club, and fairly solid with it. It came out hot, which is a +1 off the bat. The chicken may well have been a fresh breast, but it tasted like the precooked slices you’d pick up in a supermarket. The lettuce, to its credit, was still crisp. Lettuce in a hot sandwich usually gives up and becomes as limp as a paper straw long before it reaches the table.

The trouble is the filling had all congregated towards the middle. The first bite gives you everything at once, and by the last one you’re working through plain lettuce or bare bread round the outside. The tomato could have stayed in the kitchen, since all it brought was a bit of slop, though the cheese pulled its weight. Another minute of toasting and a filling spread out more and this climbs above a bog standard sandwich experience.

The verdict: Not great, not terrible
